It happens all the time, not depending on the gender. You’re choosing the best furniture in the world. Your dream becomes truе. You live in own apartment, where you have personal freedom and space. And here you face a real challenge! Now you should put all these things together. At first sight it seems to be very easy. You should just follow all the instructions and in a few hours your new TV bench or bookcase is in the living room. Men, while reading this will probably say “Yes, that’s for me. I can do this! It’s easy!”. But what about women? Are they also so confident in their abilities? Let’s raise a question. Who is better at assemblingfurniture, men or women?
Research on the given subject
The researchers based at UiT The Arctic University of Norway have conducted a comparison of men’s and women’s ability to assemble furniture. Men and women were challenged with constructing kitchen trolley, as quickly and accurately as possible, using two different-sized flat screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench and the hex key that came with the trolley. All participants worked individually on the assembly under the discreet supervision of a researcher. Half had to construct the trolley without instructions (but with an image of the final assembled product); the others had the step-by-step assembly instructions. The researchers also tested the participants’ mental rotation skills (ability to rotate objects and shapes in their mind’s eye) and asked them questions about their experience at furniture construction. The result?. The men were faster and more accurate in their construction of the trolley than the women. These differences in performance were despite the fact the men and women reported having similar levels of experience with furniture assembly.
The researchers highlight that the women’s performance with instructions was almost as good as the men’s performance without instructions. Related to this point, there was a large sex-difference in mental rotation ability. When mental rotation ability was factored out of the given analysis, there was still a sex difference in time taken to construct the furniture, but the sex difference in the accuracy of the construction disappeared, which certainly suggests that one reason men may have outperformed women is because they tended to have superior mental rotation abilities. So they were less dependent on the visuals in the instructions.
Thought, when women are asked to imagine themselves as men, they perform just about as well as men on a mental rotation test. Women also improve their scores, if researchers tell them that women tend to beat men on this test. Some psychologists believe that confidence plays an important role in explaining the gender gap on mental rotation tasks — men being more sure of themselves and more likely to guess. And here is one more interesting fact. Participants, who said they played with Legos as kid tended to be better at assembling the furniture as well. So, perhaps men are better at assembling furniture, because we expect men to be better or because boys always are raised to play with toys that emphasize these skills. …
In contrast to this, Petra Hesser, head of the Swedish giant’s German operation says: “Women perform the task calmly and following instructions from beginning to end. Men never look at the directions and have the most problems with construction because they always think they can do that”. Even though the instructions might be confusing and complex, women more often take the time to study them first, hereas men are impatient and tackle the job with no clue what they are doing. Women are good at multi-tasking and use both sides of their brains, which helps them to work things out, whereas men are much more linear in their approach.
It doesn’t matter, after all, what kind of abilities you have, whether you are a man or a woman. The truth is that we all are equal. We should put aside this fighting of sex and gender, because actually it doesn’t matter much. It is so hard to find a place in this urbanized world. So there is no sense in wasting our inner energy on unnecessary and useless competitiveness.
